A Deeper Look at the Mahzor: A Prayer Book for the Days of Awe
The High Holiday prayers are among the most emotionally powerful and spiritually uplifting in all of Jewish liturgy. Many of them are also unique to these holidays. They are contained in a special High Holidays prayer book known as a mahzor. The word itself literally means "cycle" and hints at the annual cycle of renewal, both personal and communal, that we experience each year at this time.
There is a wide variety of mahzors available — some very traditional, others much less so. Some can be downloaded, and others can be purchased online.
How to Navigate High Holidays Services
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur services can be difficult to follow, whether you're at synagogue or on your own at home. We'll help you understand the main elements of the service, so you can follow along in the mahzor.
Experience a Tour Through the Mahzor on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur
My Jewish Learning will offer a Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur "speed service," focusing on the most essential prayers of each holiday. To sign up to participate on Saturday, September 19 and Monday, September 28, register with the button below.
Prayer has been the foundation of Jewish ritual and practice for thousands of years, but you may still wonder how and why to say the prayers in the canon. At My Jewish Learning, we invite you to explore the deeper side of prayer. Each week we'll share a unique exploration of a particular Jewish prayer, plus offer background materials and more to enhance your understanding. In the meantime, you can explore all of MJL's prayer resources here.
