The movement of water, through our bodies, through the earth, through its many forms — is essential for all life processes on Earth. Once a year, on Shemini Atzeret (this year Monday, October 21st), Jews have an opportunity to say a very special prayer for water, one that uses the language of our tradition to beautifully articulate its essential role in our lives.

Sephardic Jews have a different set of prayers for rain, also said on Shemini Atzeret. These include several lovely poems for the occasion.
Prayer has been the foundation of Jewish ritual and practice for thousands of years, but you may still wonder how and why to say the prayers in the canon. At My Jewish Learning, we invite you to explore the deeper side of prayer. Each week we'll share a unique exploration of a particular Jewish prayer, plus offer background materials and more to enhance your understanding. In the meantime, you can explore all of MJL's prayer resources here.
